How likely am I to obtain a Cardiology NTN after reviewing the question bank?
The ST4 Cardiology interview is highly competitive, and no resource can guarantee an NTN. However, candidates who prepare systematically using interview-specific material, understand the scoring framework, and practise structured answers consistently perform better. This question bank is designed to mirror the real interview domains, level, and style, helping candidates maximise their interview performance and overall ranking.

How do I prepare for the ‘Medical registrar suitability’ station?
This is a new station that has been introduced in 2022 recruitment and in line with the mandatory dual accreditation with GIM.
The station will assess the non-clinical aspects of being a medical registrar, focusing on two of the Capabilities in Practice (CiPs) from the Internal Medicine Stage 1 curriculum:
- Managing an acute unselected take.
- Managing a multi-disciplinary team including effective discharge planning.
You need to have prepared examples demonstrating those capabilities. This station will last approximately 5 minutes. Our question bank offers the most common questions and their typical answers in regards to this novel station.

What score is required to obtain an NTN in Cardiology?
The score needed to guarantee a training number varies every year. However, based on an analysis of previous interview data, in order to receive an offer, a candidate must receive on average a minimum score of four from each interviewer in each station. This means that your performance in the interview should be above satisfactory; appointability on its own does not secure you an NTN.
Is this question bank suitable if I am applying from outside the UK or from a non-training post?
Yes. The question bank is particularly useful for candidates applying from trust-grade, clinical fellow, or overseas posts, as it focuses on the interview assessment framework rather than local rota experience. Model answers demonstrate how to translate non-training experience into evidence of registrar-level competence, professionalism, and readiness for higher specialty training.
How closely does the question bank reflect the real interview difficulty?
The difficulty level is intentionally set to match or slightly exceed the real ST4 Cardiology interview. This ensures candidates are not surprised by the complexity, pace, or depth of questioning on the day. Many questions are designed to test structure, prioritisation, and judgement, which are the areas where candidates most commonly lose marks.
Do I need to memorise the model answers?
No. The model answers are not intended to be memorised. They demonstrate how high-scoring candidates think and structure responses, rather than what to say word-for-word. Candidates are encouraged to adapt the frameworks and language to their own experience, which leads to more natural and credible interview performance.
How should I use the question bank in the final 2–3 weeks before the interview?
In the final weeks, candidates should focus on timed practice, verbalising answers out loud and prioritising clarity and safety over detail. Revisiting weaker domains (for example professionalism or registrar suitability) and practising concise opening statements can significantly improve consistency across stations.
Does the question bank cover recent changes to cardiology training and assessment?
Yes. Content is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect current training expectations, including the emphasis on medical registrar capability, multidisciplinary working, and communication, alongside clinical reasoning. Updates are informed by recent interview cycles and national guidance.
What if my portfolio is weaker in one area (e.g. research or leadership)?
A weaker portfolio in one domain does not preclude success. Interview performance depends on how well you explain, reflect, and prioritise, not simply the number of achievements. The question bank includes examples showing how candidates can present limited experience convincingly, while demonstrating insight and learning.
What differentiates candidates who score 4–5/5 from those who score 3/5?
Higher-scoring candidates consistently demonstrate:
Clear structure from the outset
Explicit prioritisation and safety-netting
Awareness of their limitations and when to escalate
Calm, professional communication
The question bank is specifically designed to help candidates make this jump.
How much cardiology knowledge is expected at ST4 interview level?
Interviewers are not assessing subspecialist expertise. They expect a safe, structured approach to common cardiology problems, recognition of red flags, and appropriate escalation. The question bank reflects this level precisely and avoids unrealistic expectations.
Will this resource help me understand how interviewers think?
Yes. Explanations accompanying model answers are written to reflect how interviewers score responses, including what earns marks and what leads to neutral or lower scores. This insight helps candidates tailor answers more effectively.
